Activated Charcoal & Tea Tree Oil Cold Process Soap Making Ingredients
Create Your Own Charcoal & Tea Tree Cold Process Soap
The Activated Charcoal & Tea Tree Oil Soap Making Ingredients Set is designed for those who want to make handmade cold process soap from scratch using a balanced vegetable oil blend, activated charcoal and tea tree essential oil.
The set combines olive oil, coconut oil and castor oil to provide a balanced soap base, while activated charcoal adds a distinctive dark appearance and adsorbent character.
Tea tree essential oil provides the finished soap with its characteristic fresh, herbal aroma, while sodium lactate can help improve bar hardness and make cold process soap easier to unmold.
The principal oil and sodium hydroxide quantities have been pre-calculated for the intended formula, making the set a convenient starting point for hobby makers who already understand basic cold process soap-making safety.
What’s Included?
920 g Pre-Blended Soap-Making Oils
The oil blend contains:
- Olive oil
- Coconut oil
- Castor oil
Each oil plays a different role in the finished soap.
Olive oil contributes to a mild, smooth soap character.
Coconut oil supports cleansing performance, hardness and lather.
Castor oil is commonly used to support foam stability and create a creamier lather profile.
Together, these oils provide a versatile base for cold process handmade soap.
131 g Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH)
Sodium hydroxide is the alkali required to convert the vegetable oils into soap through the saponification reaction.
The quantity supplied is calculated for the included oil blend and should not be altered unless the complete formula is recalculated.
5 g Sodium Lactate
Sodium lactate is commonly used in cold process soap formulations to support:
- Faster bar hardening
- Easier unmolding
- Improved initial firmness
- More durable finished soap bars
Depending on the formulation, sodium lactate is typically added to the cooled lye solution before it is combined with the oils.
20 ml Tea Tree Essential Oil
The kit includes 100% tea tree essential oil with its characteristic fresh, herbal and camphoraceous aroma.
In handmade soap, tea tree oil is popular for creating fresh and botanical product concepts.
Essential oils should always be used within appropriate cosmetic usage levels.
Activated Charcoal
Activated charcoal provides a distinctive black or dark gray appearance.
Its highly porous structure gives it adsorbent properties, making it a popular ingredient in cleansing products designed around:
- Deep-cleansing concepts
- Oily-skin positioning
- Black soap designs
- Urban cleansing concepts
- Botanical-style soaps
The final cosmetic performance depends on the full formulation and usage level.
Rose Petals
Rose petals are included as an optional decorative ingredient.
They can be used to add a natural visual accent to finished soap bars.
Because botanical materials may discolor or change during soap making, small quantities are recommended.
What Can You Make With This Set?
Activated Charcoal Soap
Create dark gray or black handmade soaps with a distinctive modern appearance.
Tea Tree Oil Soap
Use the included tea tree essential oil to create a fresh and herbal aromatic profile.
Botanical Cold Process Soap
Combine charcoal, tea tree and optional rose petals to produce artisan-style soap bars.
Layered or Decorative Soap
A portion of the batter can be colored with activated charcoal while another portion remains lighter, allowing you to create:
- Swirls
- Layers
- Two-tone bars
- Marble effects
- Contrasting designs
Why Use Activated Charcoal in Soap?
Activated charcoal is widely used in cosmetic cleansing products because of its strong adsorption properties.
In soap making, it can contribute:
- Deep black coloration
- A modern cosmetic appearance
- Natural-looking design
- Product differentiation
- Cleansing-focused positioning
It is especially popular in handmade soaps designed for oily or combination skin concepts.
However, activated charcoal should not be presented as treating acne, blackheads or medical skin conditions unless the finished product has appropriate evidence and regulatory authorization.
Role of Tea Tree Essential Oil
Tea tree essential oil is one of the most recognized botanical aromatic ingredients used in personal care products.
In handmade soap it contributes:
- Fresh herbal aroma
- Botanical product positioning
- Natural-style fragrance profile
- Strong sensory identity
Its usage level should be calculated carefully according to the complete formulation and applicable cosmetic safety guidance.
Role of Sodium Lactate in Cold Process Soap
Sodium lactate is a useful formulation aid in cold process soap.
It can help:
- Increase early-stage hardness
- Make soap easier to remove from molds
- Improve bar durability
- Reduce excessive softness during the first days after production
It does not replace curing. Finished soap should still complete an appropriate curing period before regular use.
Cold Process Soap Making
This set is intended for the cold process soap-making method.
Unlike melt and pour soap making, cold process soap production requires the user to work directly with sodium hydroxide.
For this reason, proper protective equipment, accurate weighing and an understanding of lye safety are essential.
How to Use
1. Prepare Your Workspace
Before beginning:
- Wear chemical-resistant gloves
- Wear protective goggles
- Work in a well-ventilated area
- Keep children and pets away
- Use heat-resistant, alkali-compatible containers
- Prepare all ingredients before starting
2. Prepare the Oil Blend
Place the supplied vegetable oil blend in a suitable container.
Warm gently if required so the oils are fully liquid and uniform.
Do not unnecessarily overheat the oils.
3. Prepare the Lye Solution
Use the exact water quantity specified in the validated recipe supplied with the set.
Slowly add the sodium hydroxide to the water while stirring carefully.
Always add sodium hydroxide to water. Never pour water directly onto sodium hydroxide.
The solution will become very hot because the dissolution process is exothermic.
Allow the solution to cool in a safe and ventilated area.
4. Add Sodium Lactate
When the lye solution has cooled sufficiently, add the sodium lactate if this is specified in the supplied recipe.
Stir carefully until evenly incorporated.
5. Combine the Oil and Lye Phases
When both phases have reached the appropriate working temperature specified in the recipe, slowly add the lye solution to the oils.
6. Blend to Trace
Use a stick blender in short pulses, alternating with manual stirring.
Continue until the mixture reaches a stable emulsion and begins to leave a visible trace on the surface.
7. Add Activated Charcoal
Disperse the activated charcoal carefully to reduce clumping.
You can add it to the entire batch or to only part of the soap batter for decorative effects.
8. Add Tea Tree Essential Oil
Add the tea tree essential oil at the appropriate stage and blend gently until evenly distributed.
Avoid excessive mixing after fragrance or essential oil addition if the soap batter is already thickening quickly.
9. Add Rose Petals if Desired
Rose petals can be used sparingly as a decorative topping.
Using dried botanicals inside wet soap batter can sometimes lead to discoloration, so surface decoration is often preferable.
10. Pour Into the Mold
Transfer the soap batter into a suitable mold.
Tap the mold gently if required to remove trapped air pockets.
11. Allow the Soap to Harden
Leave the soap undisturbed until sufficiently firm to unmold.
This generally takes around 24–48 hours, although timing varies depending on temperature and formulation.
12. Cure the Soap
After unmolding and cutting if necessary, place the bars in a dry and well-ventilated location.
Allow approximately 4–6 weeks of curing before regular use.
Why Is Curing Important?
Cold process soap continues to change after it is removed from the mold.
During curing:
- Excess moisture evaporates
- The soap becomes harder
- The bar lasts longer during use
- Lather characteristics can improve
- Overall performance becomes more stable
A properly cured bar generally performs better than freshly unmolded soap.
