Olive Oil Soap Making Ingredients Set
Make Traditional Olive Oil Soap at Home
The Olive Oil Soap Making Ingredients Set is designed for anyone who wants to learn traditional cold process soap making using olive oil as the main soap-making oil.
The set contains pure olive oil, a pre-measured quantity of sodium hydroxide, sodium lactate, selected dried flowers and step-by-step instructions.
Olive oil has been used in soap making for centuries and is particularly valued for producing mild, dense and long-lasting soap bars when properly formulated and cured.
This kit provides the principal ingredients required to create a classic 100% olive oil soap, often associated with Castile-style soap making.
What’s Included?
Pure Olive Oil – 1 L / Approximately 920 g
The set contains approximately 920 g of high-quality olive oil for use as the fatty phase of the soap formulation.
Olive oil contributes to:
- Mild cleansing
- Creamy lather
- Smooth soap texture
- Long-lasting bars after proper curing
- Traditional handmade soap character
A soap made entirely with olive oil typically develops a different lather profile from soaps containing coconut or castor oil. Instead of producing large bubbles, it generally develops a softer, creamier lather.
Sodium Hydroxide Pearls – 118 g
Sodium hydroxide (NaOH), also known as lye or caustic soda, is the alkali required to convert olive oil into solid soap through the saponification reaction.
The supplied quantity has been calculated for the included olive oil according to the intended recipe.
The amount should not be altered unless the complete formulation is recalculated using appropriate saponification values.
Sodium Lactate – 5 g
Sodium lactate is included to help improve the initial firmness of the soap.
In cold process soap it can help:
- Produce a firmer bar
- Make unmolding easier
- Support cleaner cutting
- Reduce excessive softness during the first days after production
This can be particularly helpful in 100% olive oil soap, which may remain relatively soft during the early stages of production.
Decorative Dried Flowers
The set includes selected dried botanicals such as:
- Safflower
- Calendula
- Lavender
They can be used as optional decorative elements to create a more natural and artisan appearance.
Natural botanicals may discolor or change appearance when placed inside fresh cold process soap. For this reason, they are often best used sparingly or as surface decoration.
Step-by-Step Soap Making Guide
Instructions are included to guide you through the basic cold process soap-making procedure.
Video guidance may also be available to support beginners learning the process.
What Is Olive Oil Soap?
Olive oil soap is a traditional soap made primarily or entirely from olive oil.
When olive oil reacts with sodium hydroxide, it produces sodium salts of olive oil fatty acids together with naturally occurring glycerin as part of the soap-making process.
A properly formulated olive oil soap is known for its:
- Mild cleansing profile
- Dense and creamy lather
- Smooth texture
- Simple formulation
- Traditional character
Soap made exclusively from olive oil may require a longer curing period than many mixed-oil soap formulas.
What Can You Make With This Set?
Traditional Olive Oil Soap
Create a simple, classic soap using olive oil as the sole soap-making oil.
Castile-Style Soap
The formula is suitable for producing a Castile-style solid soap based entirely on olive oil.
Botanical Soap
Add the included dried flowers for a rustic decorative finish.
Fragranced Olive Oil Soap
The set does not include fragrance, but you may add a suitable soap fragrance or essential oil if desired.
Any added fragrance should be used within an appropriate cosmetic usage level.
Handmade Gift Soaps
Finished bars can be cut, wrapped and decorated to create handmade gifts after the curing process has been completed.
Why Use Olive Oil in Soap Making?
Olive oil contains a high proportion of oleic acid, which contributes significantly to the characteristics of finished olive oil soap.
It can produce bars with:
- Smooth texture
- Mild cleansing
- Creamy lather
- Good durability after curing
However, freshly made olive oil soap can initially be softer and less bubbly than soap made with coconut oil.
Longer curing generally improves the hardness and overall performance of the finished bar.
Does Olive Oil Soap Have a Neutral pH?
Traditional soap is naturally alkaline.
Even when the correct amount of sodium hydroxide has been used, properly finished soap does not normally have a neutral pH of 7.
Correct formulation is important because it helps ensure that the sodium hydroxide is used appropriately during saponification and that excessive free alkali is avoided.
The safety and quality of finished soap should therefore be assessed through:
- Correct formulation calculations
- Accurate weighing
- Proper production technique
- Adequate curing
- Appropriate quality-control testing
How to Make Olive Oil Soap
1. Prepare a Safe Workspace
Before starting:
- Wear chemical-resistant gloves
- Wear protective goggles
- Work in a well-ventilated area
- Keep children and pets away
- Use heat-resistant and alkali-compatible equipment
2. Prepare the Olive Oil
Pour the supplied olive oil into a suitable mixing container.
If necessary, warm it gently to the working temperature specified in the supplied recipe.
3. Prepare the Lye Solution
Use the exact water quantity specified in the validated recipe supplied with the set.
Slowly add the sodium hydroxide pearls to the water while stirring carefully.
Always add sodium hydroxide to water. Never pour water directly onto sodium hydroxide.
The solution will become very hot because dissolving sodium hydroxide in water is an exothermic process.
Allow the solution to cool safely in a well-ventilated location.
4. Add Sodium Lactate
Once the lye solution has cooled sufficiently, add the measured sodium lactate if directed by the supplied recipe.
Mix carefully until evenly distributed.
5. Combine the Olive Oil and Lye Solution
When both phases have reached the appropriate working temperature, carefully add the lye solution to the olive oil.
6. Blend to Trace
Use a stick blender in short pulses, alternating with manual stirring.
Continue until the mixture forms a stable emulsion and begins to thicken.
This stage is known as trace.
7. Add Optional Fragrance
If you want a scented soap, add a compatible fragrance or essential oil at an appropriate concentration.
Fragrance is not included in the kit.
8. Add Dried Flowers if Desired
Use the included botanicals sparingly.
They can be added to the surface of the soap for decoration or incorporated carefully into the design.
9. Pour Into the Mold
Transfer the soap batter into a suitable lined or silicone soap mold.
10. Allow the Soap to Harden
Leave the soap undisturbed until it becomes firm enough to unmold.
This may take approximately 24–72 hours depending on temperature, water content and formulation.
Pure olive oil soap can sometimes require more time before unmolding.
11. Cut the Soap
Once sufficiently firm, remove the soap from the mold and cut it into individual bars.
12. Cure the Soap
Place the bars in a dry and well-ventilated area with space between them.
A minimum curing period of approximately 6 weeks is recommended.
Because this is a 100% olive oil soap, longer curing can provide significant benefits. Many olive oil soaps continue to improve over several months as they become harder and more durable.
Why Is a Longer Cure Useful?
During curing:
- Excess water gradually evaporates
- The bars become harder
- Soap lasts longer during use
- Texture becomes firmer
- Lather characteristics may improve
Traditional high-olive-oil soaps often benefit from patience.

Always verify the maximum recommended usage level before adding an essential oil or fragrance.
For professional soap formulation, measure fragrance by weight rather than relying only on drops.
Safety Information
Sodium hydroxide is highly corrosive and must be handled carefully.
- Always wear protective gloves and goggles.
- Work in a well-ventilated area.
- Avoid breathing sodium hydroxide dust.
- Always add sodium hydroxide to water.
- Never add water directly to sodium hydroxide.
- Never touch fresh soap batter with bare skin.
- Do not use aluminum containers or utensils.
- Keep sodium hydroxide away from children and pets.

Storage
Store the supplied ingredients:
- In a cool and dry environment
